Perceptions

I'd like to read your thoughts about any aspect of the perceptions discussion....

  1. listening to some of the males in class they have been stigmatized by the wrong perception of others. I wonder in some cases do they (some) of them put themselves in the position to be seen negatively? Acting as others expect you to,is feeding the negativity. Does age, maturity level, and life experiences change how people react to others perceptions?

  2. during the discussion in class i was listening to alot of the males in the class...I do believe that some of the stores do percieve most of Black Men in a negative way...I honestly believe it's just not black men but i believe women too...i work in retail and majority of the time groups of girls/boys walk in my manager nudges me to follow them and to keep a close eye on them...(Im the only black Employee) it drives me crazy...i dnt believe black ppl are all about stealing...people do steal but i never understood why blck ppl are targreted in retail....
resturants-i realized that if you order water with lemon the waitress/waiter automaically assumes your broke and wont tip... (perception-ppl only have enough money to pay for their own meal...in reality i do believe that it is society who plays a huge part in the negative perceptions...
media...example rihanna and chris brown to me another domestic violent case because they're stars everyone wants to make a big deal out of it...idk...females get abuse everyday you dnt see their case getting broadcast all over the news why this one because their celebrities...crazy...

  4. Our class discussion on perception was eye opening. We all are percepted in some shape or form, throughout life. It was very interesting to here the males discuss how their targeted when entering a store such as hollister, Abercombie abd fitch, amongst a lot others.I think as a society we need to stop preceiving one another by race. Because I believe you have to watch other races as often as you do blacks.I liked how Donchelle, talked about the Chris Brown and Rihanna case, and how their celebrities they are preceive to doing no wrong . But no matter who you are, we all are human, and commit sinful acts on many occassion. Take BeBe Winas case for and example. Church man, just because he is so powerful and Godly, Many believe he could do no harm. But just recently he was arrested for abusing his wife. I tell you, perception is tricky but as people, we must be able to decipher our perception to a certain point. Take a look at someone's interior before judging what their all about.

  5. "Acting as others expect you to,is feeding the negativity!"

I AGREE WITH CRYSTAL THAT THIS MAY ACTUALLY BE A COUSE FOR MUCH OF THE SECLUSION THAT EXIST WITHIN AMERICAN CULTURES; BLACKS AND WHITES NO MATTER THE SITUATION WILL ACT THE PART, REGARDLESS OF WHATS GOING ON. i BELEIVE THAT PEOPLE HAVE AN IMMEDIATE CONTIOUS NEED TO BE THEMSELVES AND ACT IN THE MOST CHARISMATIC WAYS OF SHOWING SELF. PEOPLE CANT HELP SHOWING OFF AND PRESENTING THERE SELF FORMULATED EQUATIONS TO LIFE; THIS IN TURN FORCES A SUB-CONTIOUS SHIELD TO FORM OVER ONES SPIRIT GUARDING IT FROM ANY EGOTISTICAL SHOTS THAT MAY COME ABOUT IN ANY FORM OF SOUL DEMEANING HATRED, RACISM,OR LOOKS. I BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE GO THROUGH MAJOR CONFLICT WHEN THEY ARE FORCED TO DUMB THEMSELVES DOWN FOR THE BENEFIT OF ANOTHER; ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY BELEIVE THAT OTHER TO BE SUBLIMINALLY "HATING" ON THERE CHARACTER

Does age, maturity level, and life experiences change how people react to others perceptions?

I ACTUALLY BELIEVE THOSE THINGS TO BE THE ONLY DECIDING FACTORS WHEN UNDERSTANDING HOW PEOPLE WILL ACT & REACT.

  6. On the topic of Perceptions, I beleive that one's age, educational level, social status and of course, life experience, has a huge impact on how we perceive the actions of others. When I'm evaluating a sistution, I rely on all these factors to allow me to make an opinion. I know that others may disagree w/this but hey, it's America and we all have a right to our opinions. Not that I'm right, thought I usually am, because I taken the time to evaluate Before responding. I have been a logical thinker all of my adult life and during my latter youth as well. Thinking before acting is a life lesson learned!.

  7. ok JJ, is not acting ones self, selling out as you young folks would say?? And is selling out, wrong if you get what you want in the end. When i decided to loc my hair, i managed a predominatly white salon,i worried that me recognizing the beauty of being my natural self would hender my position, but instead of feeding into the ignorance of natural hair, i kept my hair neat, and tightened, i dressed professionally, and added a little ethnicity into the mix,i was expressing who i am. I honestly got shunned and rediculed by people of color more so than caucasions. They asked stupid questions, like"how do you wash your hair" and can you take them out" but at least they didn't perceive me to be a gunja smoking, dirty person. My people stared and made comments like "i couldn't do that, or they would actually go to a white person to cut their hair, and if they had a problem, who did they have to come to....me, the manager. So did i sell out by conforming in a minor way, or did i reverse the negative perception?

  8. I agree with Watson that we all have perceptions of people but I believe they change over the years as we gain knowledge, learn about another's culture and just become more patient and complacent as we age. I do believe many have false perceptions such as about the Hispanic population that is currently prevalent in our area. Also I do believe that black males are profiled by police officers. How can we be more aware of our negative perceptions? I think we need to remember to walk a mile in someone else's shoes before we judge people.

  9. I believe that perception is also intertwined with conditioning and the way they see their parents treat another ethnic group. When say for instance indians or caucasions see a young black male walk into their establishment their assumption is he is either there to cause trouble, or he is there to steal. I'm saying this based on experience and observation. I agree with what crystal said that blacks play into the negative stereotypes that they are percived.

Since i have been an employee for ambercrombie& Fitch I believe that they profile not just blacks but hispanics also. The funny thing about that is almost all of the thieves or would be thieves were caucasion. I think we all should just let people be people and not let another race or ethnic group pigeon hole us

  10. is the reason they profile, because of experience? Cause and Effect. In their minds blacks, hispanics, indians, and anyone below their standards is going to do wrong, until they see different(ok some)true some are always going to have a piss poor mentality that all black folks steal, cause trouble, eat chicken and watermellon, what ever the case is, but the reality is enough have proved them correct, so they continue to carry thier personal beliefs.A reality is we as black people do eat a lot of chicken, it was cheap or ready at hand in the old days, watermellon, was in the garden, stole because (back in slavery days)it was a means of survival, now what is the excuse?? Sagging pants hell white boys are doing it now, it is a fashion statement, why i don't know, but it is, but these are realities in our world, so when someone says something, or looks at you funny, do you go off? hey i am having fun with this, keep it coming JJ

  11. Nnamdi, I find your comments very interesting and I agree that blacks and other races may play into the stereotypes, but considering labeling theory are we not becoming what people believe us to be because we have been labeled as such? In the case of the police force, even non-white policeman will profile people because like crystal said experience. If most of the time the person holding a gun or selling drugs looked like me and you would you automatically draw your weapon when approached? If you go into a crime ridden environment wouldn't you assume criminal activity is taking place? I think it is impossible for humans to just let people be people and judge from the inside out because it is unrealistic. There is some truth to stereotypes and that is what perpetuates racism and profiling. We all do it, it doesn't make it right but real.

  12. Not only having a negative perception from other races but being negativly percieved by your own race.....This is a major situation to me that goes on in urban communities.....just because you are young and black do not mean thet you are up to no good.....in these areas even other blacks feel they are superior to others and look down or even over a hard working citizen.....you speak to someone and they will just walk by not responding for no reason.....not wanting to associate with you because of what they think you might be.....for example last summer i was visiting my uncle vernon just getting home for the summer from school.....i was not even home 15 minutes and was being bailed out of jail.....the police pulled up and searched everyone that was in the yard saying no drugs will be sold here today.....they arrested 8 innocent people all family members for trespassing.....the police (black officers) looked at me as a drug dealer even after me and people at the scene was telling them i just got home from college, they was not trying to hear it.....that little missunderstanding cost me 1000 dollars in bail money and 125 dollars in court cost, just from the polices' perception of me

  13. Correct this is wrong to do and unfair Donatario, but......if you were innocent, and had not committed a crime, no drugs were sold or found.....an arrest should have never been made,as well as money spent. Can they take you down for questioning yes,but if they are not arresting you, there is no charge. Also in other situations such as yours,a large crowd, or group of people "chillin" someone says "5 0" someone looked, did, or said something for the cops to stop, be called, and make an arrest, and you know as (some) black folks do, there is one in every crowd, had to say something like "yall alway....."or wants to buck. Please don't get me wrong, i truly understand the plight, been there done that, but there is always in most cases two sides to every story. And "brother" if you didn't have any drugs, no drugs found,no noncompliance on your part, you need to take the city where you were to court. And just because you said you were in college, doesn;t mean anything, you all said it yourselves college students sale drugs to survive, smoke weed to cope and have fun, girls strip to pay for college,so you saying "oh i am just in from college" to them could have meant he just brought in a new supply.

  14. Perceptions WOW!!!! perceptions go along way in many different ways... many are negative and few are possitive. In todays society, perception is alive and everywhere you turn. No matter how hard you try to ignore it or try to change the idea, it will always be something that silently greets you before actually meeting you... The only way you can honestly look at Perception face to face is to be everything it thought your weren't... Accept it and keep moving... That was deep!

  15. Nnamdi.... I have to dis agree with you about learning the behavior from the parents, because even if the parents dont show any kind of thought about certain types, religion, races, what ever the children will get it from there outside social lives. Example school, friends, work places, television... and so on. its a learned behavior!!! and i believe PERCEPTION will never DIE!!!!
