Feel free to share your ideas about what we ought to do with the final project. Please also check back and respond to others' thoughts. Let's have an ongoing conversation!
I would love to see our class get involved in something that they can see helps to address a Social Problem immediately. So, I think the INTERACT care package idea will be a great service that will address that issue. Then, to have a counselor or "survivor" come to speak to the class would assist in a better understanding of the topic.
Lets have a final project where we dont emphasizes grades but more our interactions. Also that is fun and we can eat. So I suggest a round table discussion at a resturant or pizza party possibly subs and wings. And we discuss topics we went over in class and bring up new topics we didnt discuss.
I agree with watson and jamaal, we should all sit at a table a bring up different ideas on a social problem that can be fixed immediately. something that involves new experience in the process of the project. have a speaker talk about the issue, go to an organization, sit seeing, etc.
I agree with everyone above, it would be great to do the final project as a whole class project instead of each individual turning in a paper. That way we could all come together as a team and try to assist a social problem with the majority instead of everyone just picking a cause. I like Watson's idea of Interact. April is Sexual Assault Awareness month for them. They accept donations that are greatly needed by their clients. It would be great if all class members could bring in a donation and we could present it to them for our class. It wa also be valuable like Watson said to have a survivor to come and speak to us about what they have been through and how Interact has changed their life.
yes i agree with everyone i think that we should do a whole class project so that we can all interact and to see everyones reactions on whatever we decided on as a class. but i really like the idea with the care package because people do appreciate what u do for them it really shows them that you care. Im glad that April is Sexual Assault Awareness month because then we might can get some people to speak out on there experience and hopes to save somone else
The idea about the whole class doing a project is great! Everyone had good suggestions: the care package, the improvements of SHAW, the clothing drive, and etc.
i too agree with group effort, but how do we get graded individually? It is a whole lot of us in the class, and somehow someone is going to be doing less, and others more, and benefiting from others hard work. Is that fair? I personally would like to do something with youth, the experiences that each one of us has would impact them greatly. Something on the lines of a youth forum, i realize some of us will be working on the youth thing in Social change, but some of the topics aren't all that realistic for youth 6grade to 12th grade. I particularly would love to see the young men in our class show some of the boys in the community that college is an option, and that just because you live in the hood you don't have to be hood. I have been very impressed with the discussions and imput they have had,and think they would be great influences on youth. ladies not excluding you, you all can show that education is as cute as some knuckle head wearing baggy jeans. This is something i wanted to do on my own, but see this as a great opportunity to spread some good news and ideas from Shaw U students to the community. Maybe see if we could use the student union upstairs to host it or Chavis Park, make flyers take to middle schools and high schools, get Dr. G to connect us with counselors at schools to spread the news, have our own fraternities and sororities do step show, incorporate domestic violence in there, having someone speak, i have some friends who have been through some things who are willing to assist in anyway they can,let the kids ask questions, give them the opportunity to teach each other as well help us help them. Hey that is just my thought. I won't be in class, thursday but please consider idea.
I am feeling all the ideas but Crystal your idea is one after my own heart. I would just love to do something for the youth. They are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way(I know it's a song but hey it flows) Anyway, as far as the other projects maybe we can have several groups if some want to work with the care package project and others with the renovation of the school project they can. And how we could get a grade is writing a paper on the project and how it impacted us. Something like that. That way, everyone could pull their weight. I think the youth project is an excellent idea and I would like to be involved. I have a teenager myself who wants to attend college so it would be a great opportunity for him as well.
I agree with everyone idea. I think that we should do something with younger kids who are less fortunate. We should maybe go particpate as a big sister big brother for a day. Maybe go into their classrooms and read with them or do different activites, to let them know that someone cares about them. Or maybe we can do something with the youth, who parent(s) are incarcerated. Anything dealing with helping the youth, less fortunate, or the community I am all in!
I too feel that we should do something that involves interacting with children. Maybe not necessarily children who are less fortunate, but because many of these social constructs we discuss in class develop at an early age. I feel like if we are to make any kind of positive influence, lets start with early teens; since they are the future of our world, and society. Let's make them feel like they have an obligation to do well (not to pressure them, but make them want to succeed).
OOOwee!! you guys are awesome!!! Not counting my chickens before they hatch, but it seems a few are thinking alike. I also think that what ever each persons strength is they should utilize it, like UHALL is a football player he could discuss or work on athletics and education, Norleans (don't know his name)hell you just talk about your experiences with Katrina, let these kids know how you survived and came to college. Each one teach one,i think that is the saying,Ms. Ida,tell girls when to get out of a bad situation,i know someone is or thinks they are a DJ, don't make it a task. Dr.G can spit some knowledge rap a little bit, he impressed the heck out of my daughter with some speech he did on rap, during senior day at CIAA.
I think all the comments and ideas thus far, are very interesting. As a class I believe we can progress a change, for the better, no matter what issue we decide to tackle. Working with the youth has always been a passion of mine. Giving them insight on certain issues their silence about, could be great to work on. Dr. G already has and outlook of youth in general. That he could be forward to the class. Youth is definetly a powerful topic to discuss and voice in some way. For now, this is all I have to offer, if I so come up with another idea I'll let everyone know.
I think we should do like a food or clothing drive for the homeless and try collect items for needy people and families. We could collect them in the student center as well as collect money for the the items and then go to food lion or discount clothing stores and buy these items.
I think the class should pick a topic that will change lives and help others. High school dropout rates, Helping trouble kids and social security. All these topics can change lives and help other in one way or another. Also we can come up with a way to solve the social security problem.
I like all of the ideas mentioned above. I do think we should sit down and talk about about racism amongst ourselves as black people. To me that topic is like the elephant in the room, also it is something i think we all can relate to on some level
we should do a final project on how many of the student at shaw university go on FACEBOOK before doing any online work. lol... i believe 98% of shaw students check their FB before doing work....
i think that our final project should be on something that can benifit us as students as selfish as that sounds. But how can we help others if we cant help ourselves! We should have like an Shaw U rally on issues sort of like an panel discussion. But in all i think everyone has great ideas but we should start inside and work our way out!
Greetings, I am very impressed at how all of u guys have expressed what yall wood like 2 do for the final project, and all are great ideas. I wood just like to interject, that I 2 live here, I take cold showers, and wen I do there are some foreign parasite that flyz around, which has been here as long as me, and am not allowed to chill wit my jant after ten, etc… r all important issues. But when it comes to an opportunity to give back, well I would like to make an impact on somebodyz life other than my own. Coming up I was as bad as they come. My record precedes me. Throughout my life I have had social workers teachers, members of the church, officers, and countless mentors. I can honestly say that my mentors were the ones that really help me focus and put my best foot forward, the ones who encouraged me to be the opposite of what folk thought I was. Now that I have reached a more mature point in my life, I can not let this opportunity pass me by. I have been working with youth for some time now, and nothing is better than the feeling you get wen u no u have helped someone tap into their concealed potential. …..Ima do me regardless…and im open to the other suggestions as well. Jesus loves yall 222222
I agree with Nnambi and Dontrell, not to be selfish either, but if we want to encourage the youth to attend college, i think we can atleast do what we can to improve our own school. People love to talk about Shaw, but are we willing to try to make some changes. I think the racism dicussion panel would be good because their is nothing worse then people who don't believe racism exists, especially when blacks don't believe it exists. We could get a petition together to give to the big wigs at Shaw to make some improvements. I would love to encourage the youth to attend Shaw, but not without doing all I can to improve conditions here on campus.
All of these ideas are great. Doing something to help the youth is one that stands out the most since they are our future and some view them as a social problem. With the diverse group that we have in class everyone has something unique to offer. I know we can save them all but if we can just reach out to someone it would be great.
I'm not sure what we should do but I think that some of the ideas discussed in class where pretty good. Sepeeate group projects might be good; if not that I think we should do something as a class
I think as today's leaders of Shaw University we as a class should come up with some ideas on how we can improve Shaw and not only just talk about but be about..."actions speak louder than words" everyone always talk about how their tired of shaw and how shaw is sooo dirty well lets do something to improve it...clean up day or fix day...i know we have alot of landscaping people and creative people in the class so maybe we can do a project on that nature... one person can make a big difference...
